1. UMW190 Verizon Mobile Broadband on a Mac (OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard)

They said it couldn’t be done… (this one is really for people googling “UMW190 mac” like I was 4 hours ago)

Tonight I made the horribly misinformed choice of buying a card that wasn’t supported on a mac (though the kind gentleman at the Verizon store swore to me that it was).  After being politely told it would cost me a $50 restocking fee to return it, I decided to make it work.

After calling Verizon support and being disconnected, and then being unable to call back because it was after their 11pm cutoff, @ryanamos and I spent a good 2 hours trying to write custom modem scripts to no avail.

Turns out, you can head here (http://vzam.net/download/supported.aspx) and download the 4.3.2 software for the previous version (which is supported on a mac).  This will detect the modem and permit the connection - but unfortunately it will not activate the device… you’ll get an error “Authentication Failed”.

The secret is to use the CD that came with the modem on a separate windows machine, activate the card, and then plug it into the mac.  Works like a charm!  Happy 3g-ing!
