STOP FOCUSING ON FEATURES
In any tech demo, there is a tendency to describe somewhat cool, but esoteric features. The curse of knowledge runs rampant here. As a presenter it can be hard to put yourself in your audiences’ shoes - they are seeing your app for the first time. To the audience, the mere ability to post a movie review to Twitter with one click is incredibly unremarkable. With that in mind…
FEATURES ARE COOL, BUT != VALUE TO USERS
The audience for tech demos is usually composed of early adopters, but they are rarely the core target users of your product. They need to be constantly reminded why your features are valuable. A list of features leads to a room of glazed eyes. Tell a story! Connect your features to the user in a direct and tangible way.
AVOID THE DEEP DIVE
Like I said before, the ability to tweet in 7 different ways, or pull off some slightly new aggregation of information, is not that remarkable. Keep your message high-level, remind your audience of the value you provide to consumers, and connect it to real people. That’s all I got.
